Built on the Rock

A Five-Day Devotional

Based on Pastor Jose's message
Matthew 7:24-27 · John 16:33 · Psalm 18:2

Life can change without warning. A difficult conversation, an unexpected loss, or an uncertain future can shake what once felt secure. Jesus never promised a life without storms. He taught us how to build a life that can stand through them.

Over these five days, we will examine our foundation, put God's Word into practice, and learn to find our security in Him.

DAY 1 / 5

What Are You Building On?

SCRIPTURE Matthew 7:24-27

In Jesus' story, both builders built a house. Both experienced rain, rising water, and strong winds. But their houses had very different outcomes because they rested on different foundations.

We often spend more energy on the parts of life people can see than on the foundation beneath them. We work on our appearance, reputation, accomplishments, and plans. None of those things can provide the security that comes from building our lives on Jesus.

Pastor Jose reminds us: "The storm doesn't determine whether you stand; the foundation does."

Jesus identifies the wise builder as someone who hears His words and puts them into practice. A firm foundation involves more than knowing Scripture or agreeing with a sermon. It means allowing Jesus to shape our decisions, relationships, priorities, and responses.

Consider what you turn to first when life becomes uncertain. Is it approval? Money? Your ability to stay in control? Those things have limits. Jesus invites you to trust Him with the weight they cannot carry.

You do not have to wait for everything to fall apart before examining your foundation. Today is an opportunity to build on the Rock.

Think About It

What have I been relying on for security? Where is Jesus inviting me to trust His words more deeply?

Pray

Jesus, help me see what I am building my life on. Show me where I have placed my confidence in things that cannot sustain me. Teach me to trust You and put Your words into practice. Amen.

Take the Step

Write down one area where you are seeking security apart from God. Identify one decision you can make today that brings that area under Jesus' leadership.

DAY 2 / 5

Build Before the Rain

SCRIPTURE Matthew 7:24-25

Foundations take work, and much of that work happens where no one sees it. Before a house becomes a place people admire, someone must prepare what will hold it up.

Our spiritual lives grow through that same kind of quiet faithfulness. Time in Scripture, honest prayer, repentance, and relationships with other believers may seem ordinary. Yet these practices help us learn to trust God before circumstances test that trust.

"You cannot always control the storm, but you can prepare your foundation."

We cannot schedule every challenge or prevent every disappointment. We can choose to make room for God today. Every ordinary day gives us an opportunity to listen to Him and respond.

As Pastor Jose puts it: "You don't build your foundation in the middle of the storm. You reveal your foundation in the middle of the storm."

Pressure often exposes the habits and beliefs we have been developing. That is a reason to take today's choices seriously. It is also an invitation to receive God's grace wherever we need to grow.

If you are already facing a storm, you have not missed your opportunity to turn to Jesus. Reach for Him now. Let this season become a place where deeper trust begins.

Think About It

What daily habits are helping me grow closer to Jesus? What keeps pushing time with Him aside?

Pray

Father, teach me to be faithful in ordinary moments. Help me make room for Your Word, prayer, and relationships that strengthen my faith. If I am already in a difficult season, help me turn toward You today. Amen.

Take the Step

Set aside ten minutes today to read Matthew 7:24-27 slowly. Choose a regular time to meet with God for the rest of this week.

DAY 3 / 5

Follow the Blueprint

SCRIPTURE Matthew 7:24, 26

A blueprint can show someone exactly how a house should be built. But studying the plans will never replace following them.

In Jesus' illustration, both builders heard His words. Hearing was something they had in common. The difference was what they did afterward.

"The wise builder doesn't just admire the blueprint. The wise builder follows it."

We can appreciate a message about forgiveness while continuing to hold a grudge. We can agree that God deserves our trust while letting fear direct every decision. We can know what Jesus teaches about loving others while withholding kindness from someone difficult.

"Obedience is how the truth we hear becomes the life we build."

Obedience does not earn God's love. It is our response to the Savior who loves us. As we trust Him enough to act on His words, His teaching begins to shape how we live.

Sometimes we ask God for another word when we have not yet acted on what He has already made clear. Today, pause with what you already know. Perhaps there is an apology to offer, a dishonest habit to abandon, or an act of generosity to practice.

A foundation grows stronger as faith becomes action.

Think About It

What teaching of Jesus do I agree with but struggle to practice? What would obedience look like today?

Pray

Lord, help me respond to Your Word with more than agreement. Give me humility to receive correction and courage to obey. Thank You that I can depend on Your grace as I grow. Amen.

Take the Step

Choose one clear teaching of Jesus to practice today. Make it specific: offer the apology, tell the truth, extend kindness, or take another step He has made clear.

DAY 4 / 5

Peace While the Storm Continues

SCRIPTURE John 16:33

We sometimes assume that following Jesus should protect us from hardship. When trouble comes, we wonder whether we did something wrong or whether God has stepped away.

In John 16:33, Jesus prepares His disciples for trouble while assuring them that they can find peace in Him. He speaks these words as He approaches the cross. His promise takes suffering seriously, and His victory gives His followers reason for courage.

The wise builder also experienced the storm. A firm foundation did not stop the rain or silence the wind. It enabled the house to stand.

Being unshaken does not mean you never feel afraid, cry, or need help. You can grieve and still trust God. You can ask hard questions and keep bringing them to Jesus. Your emotions do not place you beyond His care.

The peace Jesus offers rests in who He is and what He has overcome. You may still be waiting for circumstances to change, but you can bring your needs to Him today.

Take the next faithful step. Ask someone to pray with you. Let Jesus meet you in the place that feels uncertain.

Think About It

Have I interpreted hardship as evidence that God has abandoned me? What would it look like to seek peace in Jesus while I wait?

Pray

Jesus, You know what I am facing and how tired I feel. Help me receive Your peace in the middle of uncertainty. Remind me of Your presence and give me courage for the next faithful step. Amen.

Take the Step

Name your biggest concern in prayer. Then reach out to a trusted believer and ask them to pray with you about it.

DAY 5 / 5

Built to Last

SCRIPTURE Psalm 18:2; Matthew 7:24-27

A life can look impressive and still rest on a fragile foundation. Recognition, possessions, and accomplishments tell us something about what a person has achieved. They cannot tell us everything about what is holding that person up.

"Not everything that looks successful is built to last."

Jesus' story challenges us to look beneath appearances. The question is whether our lives are taking shape around His words. Are we growing in honesty? Learning to forgive? Remaining faithful when obedience costs us something?

In Psalm 18:2, David describes God as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. His security rests in the Lord who protects and rescues him. We are invited into that same dependence on God.

As this devotional ends, remember that building on the Rock is a daily response to Jesus. We keep listening. We keep obeying. When we discover weakness, we bring it to Him. When we fail, we repent and receive His grace.

The goal is a life rooted deeply in Christ-one that grows in faithfulness through changing seasons.

Whatever comes next, keep building with Him.

Think About It

Where am I giving more attention to looking successful than to becoming faithful? What change from this week do I need to continue?

Pray

Father, You are my rock and my refuge. Shape a life in me that honors You in public and in private. Help me pursue faithfulness, trust Your strength, and keep building on Jesus every day. Amen.

Take the Step

Write one commitment you will carry into next week: "Because Jesus is my foundation, I will __________." Share it with someone who can encourage you to follow through.

The storm doesn't determine whether you stand; the foundation does.

Keep listening. Keep obeying. Keep building on the Rock.

Spreading the hope found in Jesus like a wildfire.
