The Appraisal
Your value was never determined by people's opinions, your accomplishments, or what happened to you. Your value begins with the One who created you.
The Value Was Already There
"Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness'... So God created mankind in his own image."
We live in a world that is constantly trying to determine value.
We know the value of houses, cars, clothes, watches, businesses, investments, and possessions. We compare prices. We check ratings. We look at brands. We ask, "What is this worth?"
But when God created humanity, something different happened.
Before Adam had a job, a title, accomplishments, possessions, influence, or applause, God had already declared something about him:
He was made in God's image.
Before humanity had purpose, humanity had image.
Your worth did not begin when you accomplished something. Your value did not begin when somebody approved of you. It did not begin when you became successful, useful, attractive, productive, or impressive.
Your value began with the Creator.
Think about an expensive work of art sitting unnoticed in someone's attic. Its value doesn't suddenly appear when an expert recognizes it. The value was there the entire time.
Recognition does not create value.
In the same way, somebody's inability to recognize your worth does not have the authority to remove what God placed upon His creation.
You may have been overlooked. You may have been rejected. You may have been misunderstood.
But the value was already there.
How would the way you see yourself change if you truly believed your value began with God instead of people's approval?
Father, help me see myself through the truth of Your Word instead of through the opinions of people. Thank You that my worth does not begin with what I accomplish but with the fact that You created me in Your image. Amen.
Today, write this somewhere you will see it: "My value began with my Creator." Return to that truth whenever comparison or insecurity tries to appraise you.
The Problem Was the Appraisal
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them."
A scrap-metal dealer once purchased a small gold egg, evaluating it mostly by the value of the materials he could see.
He thought he understood what he had.
Then he discovered that the object was a rare Imperial Fabergé Egg worth exponentially more than what he originally believed.
Nothing happened to the egg between the first appraisal and the second one.
It didn't suddenly become valuable.
The problem was not the value. The problem was the appraisal.
And sometimes the same thing happens to us.
Someone looks at your mistake and decides that's your value. Someone looks at your past and decides that's your value. Someone looks at your education, income, appearance, relationship status, weakness, or failure and gives you an appraisal.
Eventually, if you're not careful, you begin living according to somebody else's appraisal.
But there is a question worth asking:
Who told you what you were worth?
Was it a parent? A relationship? A teacher? A boss? A season of rejection? A failure? A mistake you still haven't forgiven yourself for?
People can misunderstand you. Culture can mislabel you. Comparison can distort you.
But creation can only be accurately appraised when you know the Creator.
Do not let someone else's limited perspective become the measuring stick for your life.
Whose appraisal has had the loudest voice in the way you see yourself?
God, expose every false appraisal I have accepted about myself. Help me stop measuring my life by rejection, comparison, failure, or people's opinions. Teach me to agree with what You say about Your creation. Amen.
Identify one label you have been carrying that did not come from God. Write it down, cross it out, and replace it with this truth: "I was created in the image of God."
What Happened to You Is Not Who You Are
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them."
Life can change quickly.
A relationship ends. A door closes. A diagnosis comes. A plan falls apart. Someone betrays you. You fail at something you thought would work.
Suddenly your circumstances look completely different.
Surfer Bethany Hamilton was only 13 years old when a shark attack resulted in the loss of her left arm. Everything about the way she would surf had to change.
Her circumstances changed. Her body changed. Her approach had to change.
But what happened to her did not have permission to decide who she was.
Circumstances can change your condition without changing your identity.
There is a difference between something that happened to you and something that defines you.
Rejection may have happened to you.
Loss may have happened to you.
Betrayal may have happened to you.
Failure may have happened to you.
But those moments do not get the final word over what God says about you.
Your worst moment cannot travel backward through time and remove the image God placed upon humanity at creation.
Your story may contain painful chapters. Those chapters matter. They may shape you, teach you, stretch you, and even change how you move forward.
But what happened to you does not determine what you are worth.
Your condition may change.
Your identity does not have to.
What experience have you accidentally allowed to become part of your identity instead of simply part of your story?
Father, help me separate what happened to me from who You created me to be. Heal the places where pain, rejection, loss, or failure have become labels. Remind me that my circumstances do not have the authority to redefine my worth. Amen.
Finish this sentence: "This happened to me, but it does not define me..." Then name the circumstance honestly and surrender its power to define you.
Their Value Matters Too
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
Discovering your value was never supposed to end with you.
Jesus connects three relationships:
Love God.
Love your neighbor.
As yourself.
How we understand our own value affects how we respond to the value in other people.
If my worth depends on being better than you, then your success becomes threatening.
If my worth depends on being noticed, then your attention feels like my competition.
If my identity is fragile, I may try to make myself feel bigger by making you feel smaller.
But when I know my value comes from God, I don't have to compete with yours.
I can celebrate you. Honor you. Encourage you. Serve you. Make room for you.
The revelation of my value was never meant to make me arrogant. It was meant to make me honorable.
Genesis doesn't say only the people you like were created in God's image.
The person beside you carries value.
The person who irritates you carries value.
The person who disagrees with you carries value.
The person with a messy past carries value.
The person who failed carries value.
The person you don't understand carries value.
I cannot celebrate God's image in me while refusing to recognize His image in you.
Knowing your value should not make you look down on people.
It should change the way you look at people.
Is there someone you have been evaluating primarily by their weakness, disagreement, failure, or current condition?
Jesus, teach me to see people the way You see them. Remove comparison, pride, jealousy, and judgment from my heart. Let knowing my value make me more compassionate, more encouraging, and more honoring toward others. Amen.
Intentionally honor someone today. Encourage them, thank them, celebrate something good in them, serve them, or remind them that they matter. Recognize the value God placed in His creation.
The Cross Reveals Value
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
How do you know something is valuable?
One way is to look at what someone is willing to give for it.
The story of Scripture gives us a powerful picture.
Genesis tells us we were created in God's image.
John tells us God loved the world enough to give His Son.
Matthew tells us to respond by loving God and loving people.
CREATED → LOVED → CALLED TO LOVE
The cross confronts every false appraisal you have accepted.
Maybe rejection has been appraising you.
Maybe failure has been appraising you.
Maybe comparison has been appraising you.
Maybe your past has been appraising you.
Maybe culture has been telling you what makes a person important.
But before anybody formed an opinion about you, God formed humanity in His image.
Before anybody placed a label on you, God had already spoken over His creation.
And before the world could decide whether humanity was worth loving, God demonstrated His love.
James 3 warns us about praising God with our mouths while using those same mouths to tear down people made in God's likeness.
Imagine telling an artist, "Your work is incredible," while ripping their paintings off the wall.
At some point the artist would say, "You cannot honor me while destroying what I created."
The same truth should shape the way we live.
Don't treat as scrap what God created with value.
Know your value.
Recognize their value.
Honor the Creator.
Honor what He created.
If you truly believed every person you encounter carries God-given value, what would change about the way you speak, respond, forgive, serve, and love?
Father, thank You for creating me, loving me, and showing Your love through Jesus. Help me stop listening to false appraisers and begin seeing myself through Your truth. Then teach me to extend that same honor to every person around me. Amen.
Carry these four reminders with you today:
Know your value.
Recognize their value.
Honor the Creator.
Honor what He created.
The value was already there.
The issue is not the lack of value. It is the placement of value. Stop treating as worthless what God has already declared valuable.
Quizás no te entendieron.
Descubrir tu valor nunca debía terminar solamente contigo.
Jesús conecta tres relaciones:
Ama a Dios.
Ama a tu prójimo.
Honra intencionalmente a alguien hoy.
CREADOS → AMADOS → LLAMADOS A AMAR
